School Council

At Joseph Hood, we are incredibly proud of our School Council because it reflects our strong belief in the importance of pupil voice. The School Council is an elected group of children who meet regularly to represent the pupils of Joseph Hood Primary School, ensuring that their ideas, concerns, and suggestions are heard and acted upon.

What is the School Council?

The School Council is a body of elected students who work together to represent the voices of their peers. They meet regularly to discuss issues, raise concerns, and suggest ways to improve our school. Through this process, the School Council plays an essential role in shaping school life from the children’s perspective.

Who can be a member of the School Council?

Each class from Year One to Year Six elects two children to represent them on the School Council. At the start of the academic year, students nominate their classmates, and each class votes for the children they feel will best represent their interests during School Council meetings.

How long can you be a School Councillor for?

School Councillors are elected for a one-year term. This ensures that new voices are heard each year, giving different children the chance to participate in shaping the school.

How many School Councillors are there?

The School Council is made up of 20 members, with representatives from each class from Year One to Year Six.

Who helps to run the School Council?

The School Council is guided by Miss Newson who supports the children in organizing meetings, discussing issues, and carrying out initiatives.

Why do we have a School Council?

At Joseph Hood, we believe it is essential that children have a platform to express their ideas and influence their school environment. The School Council allows every class to have a voice, helping to:

  • Improve the school according to the children’s point of view.
  • Provide a space for each class to share their opinions.
  • Discuss and raise important issues, such as charity fundraising or school improvements.

Which charities would we like to support this year?

In the autumn term, we are committed to supporting two important charities: the Lunch Bowl Project, which provides vital support for children in the Kibera slum, and Children in Need, a charity that helps disadvantaged children across the UK.

At Joseph Hood, our School Council is a key part of our commitment to ensuring that every child’s voice is heard and valued. Through this experience, our pupils develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
