Literacy

At Joseph Hood Primary School we provide our children with a wide range of opportunities to achieve in every aspect of the Literacy curriculum.

We aim to develop our children’s knowledge and Literacy skills through a wide range of genres, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. We provide learning opportunities which are purposeful and engaging to support our children to become confident and enthusiastic learners. Through our use of high quality texts, we aim to stimulate our children’s interest in and enthusiasm for Reading and Writing.

Reading skills are taught through focused guided reading sessions, comprehension opportunities during lessons and shared reading across all key stages. In KS1, we teach the ‘Read, Write Inc’ scheme of work. Through these approaches, we aim to ensure that all of our children develop as confident readers encouraging them to read for pleasure.

We provide a wide variety of writing opportunities, encouraging the children to write for a range of purposes and develop different styles of writing. We aim to ensure that grammar, spelling and punctuation skills are integrated in to our Literacy lessons and the children are provided with regular opportunities to review their own work to actively involve them in continually improving their writing.

Speaking and listening activities encourage the children to voice their opinions, giving them the opportunity to develop and explain their ideas. We provide our children with opportunities to discuss their work with their peers and strongly encourage peer assessment and quality discussions between children.

We also plan for cross curricular links to English which promotes the children’s enjoyment and achievement further.
