Design and Technology
At Joseph Hood, Design and Technology is taught through our topics. By linking Design and Technology to the topic being taught in each classroom, children derive more meaning and purpose from their learning as it is set in a relevant context.
As they progress through school, children at Joseph Hood will have the opportunity to work with an increasing range of materials, including reclaimed materials, resistant materials, food and textiles, and will be taught to safely handle a greater range of tools. In addition, children will learn about those structures, mechanisms and energy systems which will be used in their designing and creating activities.
Design and Technology is a practical and imaginative curriculum area where children frequently use higher level thinking skills to problem solve. Such problem-solving work is intended to further promote the children’s self-reliance, perseverance and initiative. We work to ensure that our children will develop in all these areas and also experience the fun, excitement and feeling of achievement to be found in Design and Technology as they ‘learn through doing’.

Year 6 Anderson Shelters from WW2
This term, Year 6 explored the fascinating history of World War Two, focusing on how everyday lives were impacted during this challenging period. In Design and Technology, the children delved into the world of Anderson shelters, learning about their purpose and construction. After conducting thorough research into materials and their properties, the students applied their knowledge to design and create their own model Anderson shelters.
The results have been fantastic, with each model showcasing the children’s creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork. The class thoroughly enjoyed this hands-on project, gaining a deeper understanding of the resilience and resourcefulness of people on the home front during WW2.
